A Top bar Bar hive is different to from the previous hives mentioned above, it is a much simpler construction and has no frames. Instead this hive just has wooden bars, that have a small line of beeswax applied to them to encourage the bees to draw comb where the beekeeper would prefer. With the lack the absence of frames, when the honey is taken from this hive it needs a press to crush the comb, the downside of this is that the bees need to recreate the comb whenever honey is removed. Frank, a long standing beekeeper has expressed an interest in trying out one of these hives, we will be interested to see how he gets along.
